2月26日 Sammy the Snowman![]() The snow storm on Sunday night brought us only 2 inches of snow...some shoveling and minor inconveniences...but it also brought us a friend - Sammy the Snowman. Sammy appeared in our yard on Monday afternoon at around 3 pm, spotting a full white belly, luminous yellow-green round eyes and spruce eyebrows & mustache.

He seemed very friendly and was pleased to see us.
Despite the wind, he stood bravely against it as we took pictures with him.
Hopefully the wind dies down and the temperature remains slightly below freezing, so Sammy can visit with us for the next couple of days. ![]() 2月22日 WeEkEnD sPeCiAl for 24 & 25 February 2007

2月17日 Chronicles of Ancient DarknessMy little sister got me hooked on this author. Michelle Paver writes an adventurous & exciting story of a young boy, Torak who learns to live on his own when his father dies after an attack by a bear. The story is set in The Forest 6000 years ago where people live in clans and survive alone on Mother Nature. Hunters (or predators) rule The Forest and each clan is prohibited to hunt their Clan Animal. Each kill is used thoroughly, as a source of food, clothing, bedding and even as weapons; nothing is wasted. Torak has learnt the rules of The Forest but still there are things which his young mind cannot understand. As he journeys through The Forest, he picks up survival skills and friends (and foes). The Chronicles of Ancient Darkness are written as children's books but it didn't make me feel juvenile to read it. In fact it renewed simple values of life, for example: loyalty in friendships, determination during times of trial. These are lessons which we learnt as we were growing up but may have been clouded as we grew older and got too busy with our urbanized lifestyle. Reading with an adult mind simply helps to imagine better, feel more deeply for the characters and be able to share an experience with my little sister.
Enough said, young customers of Sunrise Cafe, I encourage you to read Wolf Brother, just to see if you can relate to Torak. Adult customers of Sunrise Cafe, if you have children, nieces or nephews, encourage them to read or read it yourself and share it with a loved one.
P.S. Jon & I read both books and we Wolf Brother & Spirit Walker are available at the Warwick Public Library on Sandy Lane.
Soul Eater is the third book of the Chronicles. My sister sent me her book from Singapore (Thanks, Sarah
At the time of this blog, Soul Eater is not yet available at the Warwick Public Library, but you can purchase it from Amazon. 2月16日 February 18 is Chinese New YearChinese New Year for 2007 is the year of the boar or pig. Those born in 1923, 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983 or 1995 were born under this sign and are highly regarded for chivalry and pureness of heart. ![]() Contrary to its rather negative reputation in the West, the Pig of Chinese Astrology may be the most generous and honorable Sign of the Zodiac. Pigs are nice to a fault and possess impeccable manners and taste. They have so much of the perfectionist in them that others may be inclined to perceive them as snobs, but this is a misconception. Pigs are simply possessed of a truly luxurious nature, one that delights in finery and riches (in surroundings, food, lovemaking and otherwise). This Sign believes in the best qualities of mankind and certainly doesn't consider itself to be superior. Pigs also care a great deal about friends and family and work hard to keep everyone in their life happy. Helping others is a true pleasure for the Pig, who feels best when everyone else is smiling. A Pig with no one around to appreciate its giving nature is a sad sight. Pigs are so magnanimous they can appear almost saintly; this can lead some less-than-well-intentioned souls to stomp all over this Sign, and the bad news is, the Pig will take the blows! Pigs make great companions in part because of their refusal to see the more negative or base qualities in a partner, but that rose-colored view can lead to this Sign's allowing itself to be taken advantage of. Contrary to their seemingly benign dispositions, however, Pigs can be quite venomous in response to being crossed by a lover, friend or business partner. Pigs are highly intelligent creatures, forever studying, playing and probing in their quest for greater knowledge. They can be misinterpreted as being lazy, however, due to their love of reveling in the good stuff; this Sign could happily spend hours on end making love, napping, taking a long bubble bath or dallying over an incredible spread of rich foods. Pigs tend to make wonderful life partners due to their hearts of gold and their love of family. Even so, Pigs can be rather exclusive, choosing to spend time with those who will appreciate them most and ignore the rest of the populace. Pigs would do well to realize that there's more to life than being needed. When they open up their world to a diverse group of people, they will truly bloom. The most compatible match for a Pig is the Rabbit or the Sheep.
