Counting Down to St Patrick's Day

St. Patrick's Day countdown banner

Saint Patrick’s Day or St. Patrick’s Day, holiday honoring Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. It is celebrated annually on March 17, his feast day. Saint Patrick was a missionary in the 5th century who is credited with converting Ireland to Christianity. St. Patrick’s Day is a national holiday in Ireland. It is also celebrated by people of Irish descent in many other countries, especially by Irish Americans in the United States.

One popular St. Patrick’s Day tradition is wearing green clothing. Green, the national color of Ireland, symbolizes the island’s lush landscape. The main symbol associated with the holiday is the shamrock, a small three-leafed clover or clover-like plant. According to legend, St. Patrick used the shamrock, because of its three leaves, to explain the Christian doctrine of the Trinity to the Irish people. The shamrock is now the national emblem of Ireland.

St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland

In Ireland, St. Patrick's Day is an important religious holiday celebrating the conversion of the Irish to Christianity. Businesses are closed, except for some restaurants and pubs. People attend church services honoring St. Patrick and learn about his life. Many Irish people wear sprigs of real shamrock and greet each other by saying, 'Beannachtaí na Féile Pádraig oraibh,' or 'May the blessings of St. Patrick be with you.' Many enjoy a traditional meal that includes colcannon—boiled potatoes and cabbage mashed together with butter. The day is also seen as a reprieve from the sober weeks of Lent, and adults may drink a pint of ale (called “drowning the shamrock”) and allow their children some candy.

Until recently, Ireland held few parades or secular celebrations on St. Patrick’s Day. However, in 1995 the government of Ireland established the St. Patrick’s Day Festival with the goal of creating a national festival “that ranks amongst all of the greatest celebrations in the world.” The four-day festival, launched in 1996 and held annually in Dublin, features a major parade on St. Patrick’s Day as well as music and dance performances, food, crafts, and a fireworks display. The event is Ireland’s largest annual celebration.

St. Patrick’s Day in the United States and Canada

Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day has been a tradition in the United States since 1737, when the Charitable Irish Society of Boston organized the first St. Patrick’s Day parade. New York City’s parade began in 1762. St. Patrick's Day was even acknowledged by General George Washington during the American Revolution. In 1780, during the Continental Army’s bitter winter encampment in Morristown, New Jersey, Washington permitted his troops, many of whom were of Irish descent, a holiday on March 17. This event is now known as the St. Patrick's Day Encampment of 1780.

Today, more than 100 U.S. cities hold St. Patrick’s Day parades. The parade up Fifth Avenue in New York City is the largest and most famous. The parade traditionally stops at St. Patrick's Cathedral for a blessing of the marchers by the cardinal of New York. The St. Patrick’s Day parade in Savannah, Georgia, first held in 1824, is one of the largest and oldest in the United States. In Canada, Montréal’s St. Patrick’s Day parade, first held in 1824, is the oldest in the country. Toronto has held a large parade since 1988.

Popular St. Patrick’s Day customs in the United States and Canada include drinking beer that has been colored green, eating corned beef and cabbage, wearing shamrock pins and green clothing, and generally celebrating all things Irish. In Chicago, the Chicago River is dyed green, a tradition started in 1962.

Sammy the Snowman

The snow storm on Sunday night brought us only 2 inches of snow...some shoveling and minor inconveniences...but it also brought us a friend - Sammy the Snowman.  Sammy appeared in our yard on Monday afternoon at around 3 pm, spotting a full white belly, luminous yellow-green round eyes and spruce eyebrows & mustache.

He seemed very friendly and was pleased to see us.
Despite the wind, he stood bravely against it as we took pictures with him.

Hopefully the wind dies down and the temperature remains slightly below freezing,
so Sammy can visit with us for the next couple of days.

Chronicles of Ancient Darkness

My little sister got me hooked on this author.  Michelle Paver writes an adventurous & exciting story of a young boy, Torak who learns to live on his own when his father dies after an attack by a bear.  The story is set in The Forest 6000 years ago where people live in clans and survive alone on Mother Nature.  Hunters (or predators) rule The Forest and each clan is prohibited to hunt their Clan Animal.  Each kill is used thoroughly, as a source of food, clothing, bedding and even as weapons; nothing is wasted.  Torak has learnt the rules of The Forest but still there are things which his young mind cannot understand.  As he journeys through The Forest, he picks up survival skills and friends (and foes).  The Chronicles of Ancient Darkness are written as children's books but it didn't make me feel juvenile to read it.  In fact it renewed simple values of life, for example: loyalty in friendships, determination during times of trial.  These are lessons which we learnt as we were growing up but may have been clouded as we grew older and got too busy with our urbanized lifestyle.  Reading with an adult mind simply helps to imagine better, feel more deeply for the characters and be able to share an experience with my little sister.
Enough said, young customers of Sunrise Cafe, I encourage you to read Wolf Brother, just to see if you can relate to Torak.  Adult customers of Sunrise Cafe, if you have children, nieces or nephews, encourage them to read or read it yourself and share it with a loved one.

P.S. Jon & I read both books and we  them !

Wolf Brother & Spirit Walker are available at the Warwick Public Library on Sandy Lane.

Soul Eater is the third book of the Chronicles.  My sister sent me her book from Singapore (Thanks, Sarah  )  I read the book in two nights...lost sleep...but it was worth it.  The book was good, I COULD NOT put it down.  Torak and Renn face even tougher challenges in this adventure...not to mention the frozen wilderness and howling blizzards of the Far North.  Then they have to face Torak's worst nightmare - the Soul Eaters.  As their friendship is tested, they have to find a way to unite their strength to defeat their foes.

At the time of this blog, Soul Eater is not yet available at the Warwick Public Library, but you can purchase it from Amazon.

February 18 is Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year for 2007 is the year of the boar or pig. Those born in 1923, 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983 or 1995 were born under this sign and are highly regarded for chivalry and pureness of heart.

Contrary to its rather negative reputation in the West, the Pig of Chinese Astrology may be the most generous and honorable Sign of the Zodiac. Pigs are nice to a fault and possess impeccable manners and taste. They have so much of the perfectionist in them that others may be inclined to perceive them as snobs, but this is a misconception. Pigs are simply possessed of a truly luxurious nature, one that delights in finery and riches (in surroundings, food, lovemaking and otherwise). This Sign believes in the best qualities of mankind and certainly doesn't consider itself to be superior. Pigs also care a great deal about friends and family and work hard to keep everyone in their life happy. Helping others is a true pleasure for the Pig, who feels best when everyone else is smiling.

A Pig with no one around to appreciate its giving nature is a sad sight. Pigs are so magnanimous they can appear almost saintly; this can lead some less-than-well-intentioned souls to stomp all over this Sign, and the bad news is, the Pig will take the blows! Pigs make great companions in part because of their refusal to see the more negative or base qualities in a partner, but that rose-colored view can lead to this Sign's allowing itself to be taken advantage of. Contrary to their seemingly benign dispositions, however, Pigs can be quite venomous in response to being crossed by a lover, friend or business partner.

Pigs are highly intelligent creatures, forever studying, playing and probing in their quest for greater knowledge. They can be misinterpreted as being lazy, however, due to their love of reveling in the good stuff; this Sign could happily spend hours on end making love, napping, taking a long bubble bath or dallying over an incredible spread of rich foods. Pigs tend to make wonderful life partners due to their hearts of gold and their love of family. Even so, Pigs can be rather exclusive, choosing to spend time with those who will appreciate them most and ignore the rest of the populace. Pigs would do well to realize that there's more to life than being needed. When they open up their world to a diverse group of people, they will truly bloom.

The most compatible match for a Pig is the Rabbit or the Sheep.

We wish everyone a Healthy, Prosperous & Successful New Year !

Eggs & Nutrition

Energy value of eggs
A medium egg has an energy value of 76 kilocalories (318 kilojoules) and the consumption of one egg daily would contribute only around 3% of the average energy requirement of an adult man; 4% for an adult woman.

With their significant protein, vitamin and mineral content and relatively low saturated fat content, eggs are a valuable component in a healthy diet.

Protein
Eggs are an excellent source of protein. Egg protein is of high biological value as it contains all the essential amino acids needed by the human body. Eggs therefore complement other food proteins of lower biological value by providing the amino acids that are in short supply in those foods. 12.5% of the weight of the egg is protein and it is found in both the yolk and the albumen (egg whites). Although protein is more concentrated around the yolk, there is in fact more protein in the albumen.

On the evaluation scale most commonly used for assessing protein, egg is at the highest point, 100, and is used as the reference standard against which all other foods are assessed.

Vitamins
Eggs contain most of the recognised vitamins with the exception of vitamin C. The egg is a good source of all the B vitamins, plus the fat-soluble vitamin A. It also provides useful amounts of vitamin D, as well as some vitamin E.

Minerals
Eggs contain most of the minerals that the human body requires for health. In particular eggs are an excellent source of iodine, required to make the thyroid hormone, and phosphorus, required for bone health. The egg provides significant amounts of zinc, important for wound healing, growth and fighting infection; selenium, an important antioxidant; and calcium, needed for bone and growth structure and nervous function. Eggs also contain significant amounts of iron, the vital ingredient of red blood cells, but the availability of this iron to the body is uncertain.

Carbohydrate and dietary fibre
Eggs contain only traces of carbohydrate and no dietary fiber.

Fat
10.8% of the egg content is fat. The fat of an egg is found almost entirely in the yolk; there is less than 0.05% in the albumen.

Approximately 11% of an egg’s fatty acids are polyunsaturated, 44% monounsaturated and only 29% saturated.

Cholesterol
Cholesterol and Lecithin are fat-like substances and are essential to the structure and function of all cells in the body. Cholesterol helps to maintain the flexibility and permeability of cell membranes and is also a raw material for the fatty lubricants that help to keep the skin supple. Cholesterol is essential for the production of sex hormones, cortisol, vitamin D and bile salts.

Lecithin is involved in general lipid transportation in the blood and in the metabolism of cholesterol.

Nutritional Value of Eggs

Eggs make a valuable contribution to a healthy, balanced diet. Eggs provide protein, vitamin A, riboflavin, and other vitamins and minerals. The yolk contains all the fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol in an egg.

Eggs are an excellent source of high-quality protein and are far less expensive than most other animal-protein foods. Although eggs contain a significant amount of cholesterol, they need not be excluded from the diet. Most people need not be concerned about eating eggs in moderation.
